Boxing Day
| South Creek Foxhounds welcomed area 4-H
and United States Pony Clubs to its Pony
Club Boxing Day meet held the afternoon of
December 26th. Field Master Jack Phethean
ex-MFH was a natural leading the 15 junior
riders; not surprising when he is
the senior of 3 generations of
lifelong foxhunters. Many of the
visiting children were novices
outside of the lesson ring but they
were soon comfortable moving at a
working hunter pace across open
pastures, weaving through grazing
cattle and negotiating natural
obstacles. |
 |
| Mr. Phethean
answered questions about the
huntsman and his horn, the
whippers-in, the hounds and of
course, the fox. The juniors were
game when the hounds gave chase to a
coyote and galloped on through
palmetto scrub until slipping
through barbed-wire fencing and
leaving the ranch. Family members
were invited to join in the fun
either on horseback or as a
spectator riding in the bed of two
Tally-ho trucks. Afterwards,
everyone sat down to a traditional
Boxing Day English Tea of assorted
sliced meats, cheeses and breads,
fried vegetables known as "bubble
and squeak" (that's what it does in
a hot pan) and a variety desserts. |
Since their introduction to foxhunting,
several children have returned to the hunt
field as part of South Creek Pony Club.
Haylee Russell, age 11 is enthusiastic about
her first season riding to hounds; "it's
really fun to be out in the open and away
from the ring. My horse moves with more
energy; he's having as much fun as I am.
Galloping cross country has made me a more
confident and balanced rider." Samantha
Claire Wiedrick, age 9 and in her 5th season
foxhunting earned her colors last season and
has moved from her small pony, Precious to
the second flight astride Annie.
